MILLINGTON – Millington scored 19 points in the third quarter to erase a three-point halftime deficit en route to a 40-28 victory over Vassar in the first round of the Michigan High School Athletic Association’s district tournament.
Anika Sykes led the Cardinal charge with 10 second-half points and a game-high 17. The 17 points scored by sophomore point guard is a career high. Sykes also had two blocks.
Leah Denome scored eight points on the night including six in the decisive third quarter. Denome also had three steals. Moriah Babcock had seven points off the bench, including five rebounds. Austin Palmer scored four points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Madison Hahn and Natalie Oakwood rounded out the scoring with two points apiece. Hahn pulled down 11 rebounds.
Millington (3-17) moves on to the district semi-final to face Montrose (4-15) on Wednesday, March 6. Tip-off is at 7:30 p.m. The other semi-final game will tip-off at 5:30 p.m. with Reese (19-2) squaring off with New Lothrop (16-4). Admission is $6 and passes will not be accepted.
