Cardinals fall to First-Place Dukes
MILLINGTON – The Garber girls soccer team scored early and often in finishing with a 7-1 Tri-Valley East Conference victory over Millington on Monday. The Dukes (12-1-1), currently in first place in the TVC-East, scored three times in the first twelve minutes of game play to take the early advantage, and from there the Cardinals were forced to play from behind for the remainder of the game.
“We came out sluggish, and missed a few coverage responsibilities early in the game on defense,” Millington coach Andrew Selich said. “We have to be better than that early on in games against good teams like Garber if we want to compete. We settled in after that, but we need to strive to be better defensively for the full 80 minutes of the match.”
Millington’s lone goal came on a strike from senior Elizabeth Selich with 15:44 left to play in the first half. Selich received a through pass from senior Taylor Wirsing 10 yards outside the box and beat the Garber defender to the ball to gain possession. From there, Selich centered herself before burying the shot to the low right corner to put the Cardinals on the board.
“That was a nice goal and it made it a 3-1 game,” Coach Selich said. “It gave us some life and we played even with them for a few minutes, but Garber has a lot of talent and we just could not find another break.”
Garber scored once more before half and three times after to account for the final score. The Dukes have outscored opponents 69-11 on the season, and only have to defeat Birch Run this Thursday to claim a league championship.
GK Hannah Bees made 15 saves in net for Millington (2-8-1). The Cardinals return to action on Thursday when they host the Caro Tigers.
