Cardinals fall in TVC-East matchup
FRANKENMUTH – The Millington Cardinals girls soccer team dropped a Tri-Valley East Conference matchup to Frankenmuth by a score of 6-0 on Wednesday. Millington (2-7-1) generated seven shots on goal in the game but could not capitalize on those chances as the Frankenmuth goalkeeper held on to collect the shutout for the Eagles (9-2-1).
“We had several good chances to score,” Millington coach Andrew Selich said. “It just seemed like every time it looked like we would, the Eagle goalie would get the stop. It’s unfortunate, but overall I thought we played a good game.”
The Eagles mercied the Cardinals 8-0 back on April 23, so this time the Cardinals were determined to play the entire game against the state-ranked Eagles. For the first thirteen minutes, the Cardinals ‘D’ held strong before Frankenmuth was awarded a Direct Kick after an infraction. The kick was successful, and the Eagles took a 1-0 lead. Each of the first three goals for Frankenmuth were the result of a free kick, the first two coming via Direct Kicks and the third a Penalty Kick awarded for a foul called in the box.
“We were playing aggressive and those things happen when you do that,” Coach Selich said. “Whether or not you agree with the calls is beside the point. When you commit to play that aggressive, you have to be ready to be called out on it.”
Trailing 4-0 at the half, the Cardinals made a push early in the second half, but two goals by Frankenmuth, the first with 34:05 left and the second with 21:09 left, put the game out of reach for Millington.
“Overall, we played well. We were coming off a big win on Monday, and we were feeling good about that. We improved from the first match with Frankenmuth, so that gives us something to build on.”
For the Cardinals, goalkeeper Hannah Bees made 20 saves in the loss. Millington returns to action Friday, May 11, with a home game against Saginaw Arts and Sciences Academy. Kickoff is scheduled for 5:00pm.
