Cardinals lose league match with Panthers
MILLINGTON – The #8 ranked Birch Run Panthers mercied the Millington Cardinals soccer team by a final of 8-0 on Thursday. The Cardinals (1-5-1) only managed four shots on goal against the Panthers (7-2), which is slightly more than the state-ranked usually allows.
“Birch Run’s defense is really good,” Millington coach Andrew Selich said. “We made a few pushes against their back line, and ended up with a few good chances to score. But they are so strong in the midfield that maintaining an attack on their goal is really difficult.”
The Millington defense held their own for the first twenty minutes of play, as the high-scoring Panthers led 2-0 with 19:22 left to play before halftime. But Birch Run added three more goals over the final fourteen minutes of play in the first half to take a 5-0 lead into the break.
Birch Run added three more goals after halftime, finishing the game with goal number eight with 16:07 left on the game clock.
“Their ball movement was really good and they were getting good looks at our goal,” Coach Selich said. “That led to a lot of shots. Birch Run is ranked so highly in the state for a reason. They put in the extra work and it shows on the field.”
Millington goalkeeper Hannah Bees made 19 saves in the loss. The Cardinals return to action Saturday, May 5, when they play host to the Genesee Christian Soldiers. Kickoff is scheduled for 12:00pm.
