CASS CITY — Millington scored 20 unanswered points after halftime Friday night, pulling away from Cass City for a 27-7 victory and clinching at least a share of the Big Thumb Conference White Division championship. The Cardinals improved to 5-0, marking the 15th time in school history that Millington has opened a season with five consecutive victories. Layden DeLong gave Millington a 7-0 lead with a 3-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. Evan Kreger added the extra point. Cass City tied the game in the third quarter when Preston Dorland connected with Xavier Spence for an 8-yard touchdown. The tie did not last long. DeLong found Brenden Wascher for a 40-yard touchdown, putting Millington back in front, 14-7. Millington stretched the lead to 21-7 in the fourth quarter when DeLong threw a 29-yard touchdown pass to Drake Terwilliger. DeLong then sealed the victory by returning an interception 40 yards for a touchdown. DeLong completed 5 of 6 passes for 87 yards and two touchdowns while rushing for 66 yards and another score. He also led the defense with 11 tackles and the interception return. Terwilliger led Millington’s rushing attack with 106 yards on 12 carries. Wascher caught two passes for 52 yards, while Terwilliger added a 29-yard touchdown reception. The Cardinals finished with 278 yards of offense, including 191 rushing. Millington’s defense intercepted two passes and held Cass City to 104 rushing yards. Kreger recorded the Cardinals’ other interception, and Gauge Woelzlein contributed ten tackles and a sack. The victory was also the 50th of Millington coach Jason Germain’s career. Germain reached the milestone in his 56th game as head coach. Millington will host Reese at 7 p.m. Friday, October 2, in Big Thumb Conference crossover action. Reese competes in the BTC Black Division.
