Millington rallies past USA for 19-14 victory

SEBEWAING — The Millington varsity football team regained the lead in the fourth quarter and held off Unionville-Sebewaing Area for a 19-14 victory Thursday night. The Cardinals trailed 6-0 after USA’s Grady Bolzman scored on a 5-yard run in the first quarter. Millington answered with 13 points in the second quarter. Hudson Myers broke free for a 48-yard touchdown run, and Evan Kreger kicked the extra point to give the Cardinals a 7-6 lead. Layden DeLong later scored on an 8-yard run to send Millington into halftime with a 13-6 advantage. USA moved back in front during the third quarter. The Patriots recorded a safety before Noah Howard scored on a 1-yard run, giving USA a 14-13 lead entering the final quarter. DeLong and Kreger connected for the winning score in the fourth quarter. DeLong found Kreger for a 13-yard touchdown pass, putting Millington back in front 19-14. The Cardinals’ defense kept USA off the scoreboard for the rest of the game to preserve the win. Myers led Millington’s offense with 82 yards and a touchdown on nine carries. Eli Staffne added 48 yards on three attempts, while DeLong completed 5 of 11 passes for 70 yards and a touchdown. Kreger caught three passes for 51 yards and the winning score. Brenden Wascher added two catches for 19 yards. Millington finished with 232 yards of offense, including 162 on the ground. USA rushed for 194 yards but completed only one pass for 10 yards. DeLong led the Cardinals’ defense with nine tackles. Gauge Woelzlein recorded eight tackles, while Brason Trato added nine total tackles and assisted on a tackle for loss. Staffne recorded Millington’s lone sack. The Cardinals improved to 2-0 and will host Laker at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 11.
