MILLINGTON — The Millington varsity football team rushed for 403 yards and scored 42 first-half points in a 55-14 season-opening victory over Detroit Communication Media Arts on Thursday at Furno Field. Eli Staffne led the Cardinals with three rushing touchdowns. He finished with 86 yards on nine carries as Millington averaged 8.6 yards per rushing attempt. Hudson Myers opened the scoring with a 2-yard touchdown run. Staffne followed with a 1-yard score, and Layden DeLong ran in the two-point conversion. DeLong then returned a punt 65 yards for a touchdown to give Millington a 21-0 lead after the first quarter. Staffne added touchdown runs of 18 and 27 yards in the second quarter. Detroit CMA got on the board when Kaleb Barnes connected with Kuronne Prescott for a 35-yard touchdown, followed by Robert Dean’s conversion run. Millington answered before halftime when DeLong found Evan Kreger for a 52-yard touchdown pass. Kreger kicked five extra points during the game as the Cardinals carried a 42-8 lead into halftime. Gauge Woelzlein scored on a 38-yard run in the third quarter, and Brason Trato added a 3-yard touchdown run to complete Millington’s scoring. Woelzlein finished with 57 yards on four carries, while Trato rushed for 59 yards on five attempts. Myers led Millington’s ground attack with 106 yards on 10 carries. DeLong added 51 rushing yards, giving the Cardinals five players with at least 50 yards on the ground. Millington’s defense limited Detroit CMA to minus-17 rushing yards and four first downs. The Cardinals recorded four sacks and intercepted three passes. Coleton Schisler had two interceptions, while Kreger added another. Staffne recorded 2½ sacks, with Woelzlein and Ian Stiff also contributing to the pass rush. Prescott scored Detroit CMA’s final touchdown on an 83-yard reception from Barnes in the fourth quarter. He finished with four catches for 126 yards and two touchdowns. Millington will travel to Unionville-Sebewaing Area for a 7 p.m. game Thursday, September 3.
