BAD AXE — Millington softball added another chapter to one of the best seasons in program history Saturday, capturing the Division 3 regional championship with an 11-1 semifinal victory over Rochester Hills Lutheran Northwest and a 7-5 win over Marine City in the title game. The regional crown is the seventh in school history and the milestone-filled day also marked head coach Greg Hudie’s 500th career victory. Millington will continue its postseason run Tuesday, June 9, when it faces New Lothrop in a Division 3 quarterfinal at 5:30 p.m. on the campus of Mott Community College. The Cardinals wasted little time taking control in the regional semifinal, scoring four runs in the first inning and never looking back in an 11-1 victory. Logan Matusik led a 15-hit attack by going 4-for-4 with three runs scored. Makenna Klauka was nearly unstoppable, collecting four hits, including a home run, and driving in three runs. Zella Hascall added three RBIs, Kamryn Blackmer knocked in two runs and Ashlyn Bentoski contributed an RBI as Millington’s lineup produced from top to bottom. Bentoski dominated in the circle, allowing just four hits and one run while striking out 11 over six innings. The Cardinals played flawless defense behind their ace, committing no errors. The regional final proved to be a much tougher test, but Millington answered every challenge in a 7-5 victory over Marine City. The Cardinals built a 5-1 lead through five innings before Marine City rallied. Millington responded with two insurance runs in the seventh and held off a late push to secure the championship. Karlie Sherman delivered the biggest swing of the day, belting a home run and driving in three runs. Bentoski added two RBIs, while Matusik scored twice and collected two hits. Blackmer crossed the plate twice, and Hascall added a hit as Millington made the most of its seven-hit attack. Bentoski earned her second win of the day, working all seven innings and allowing five runs while striking out four. The regional championship continues a memorable postseason for the Cardinals and gives Hudie his 500th career coaching victory. Now Millington will turn its attention to New Lothrop with a spot in the Division 3 state semifinals on the line Tuesday evening.
