MILLINGTON — History was made Saturday as Millington baseball captured the first regional championship in program history, defeating seventh-ranked Grosse Pointe University Liggett 7-2 to advance to the Division 3 state quarterfinals. The Cardinals continued their remarkable postseason run by knocking off another highly regarded opponent. During their five-game playoff winning streak, Millington has defeated 15th-ranked Reese (25-10-1), LakeVille, Montrose (23-5), 10th-ranked Lakers (31-8), and now seventh-ranked Grosse Pointe University Liggett (27-11). Millington wasted little time taking control of the regional final, scoring four runs in the opening inning and adding another in the second to build a 5-0 lead. The Cardinals added insurance runs in the sixth and seventh innings while keeping the Knights at bay. Garrett Woodward continued his outstanding postseason with a perfect 3-for-3 performance, scoring twice and driving in a run. Drake Terwilliger delivered the biggest offensive punch, going 3-for-4 with a double and three RBIs. Brandon Dickie added a hit and scored a run, while Chase Milostan drove in a run, and Lukas Henderson added an RBI. On the mound, Henderson turned in another championship-caliber performance. The senior went the distance, allowing two runs on 10 hits while walking just one and keeping a potent Liggett lineup from mounting a serious comeback. Although the Knights outhit Millington 10-8, the Cardinals capitalized on scoring opportunities, played solid defense, and executed throughout the game to secure the historic victory. The regional championship is the first in school history for the Millington baseball program and sends the Cardinals into the Division 3 quarterfinals for the first time. Millington will host a state quarterfinal game at 3 p.m. Saturday, June 6. The Cardinals will look to continue their postseason surge with a trip to the Division 3 state semifinals on the line.
