Millington football’s last regional title came in 2016 in one of the best comebacks in Michigan High School Atheltic Association (MHSAA) playoff history. The date was November 11, 2016, and when the first-half ended the Cardinals were losing to Detroit Central 20-0. The Cardinals stormed out of the gate in the second half to score 22 points to wrap up their fifth regional title in a 22-20 victory. The Cardinal defense came out strong in the 2nd half recovering three fumbles including Bret Knox’s recovery of a Detroit Central fumble on their first play of the half. Three plays later Jared Roehl rumbled into the endzone from four yards away give Millington flight. Roehl would score again in the quarter along with two conversion runs to close the gap to 20-16 heading into the fourth quarter.
After a fourth-quarter defensive stop which saw a pass breakup by Kohlton Sherman on 4th and 8, Millington found themselves 71 yards from the endzone late in the game. Quarterback Bryce Bearss carried the ball for 12 yards on the first play, followed by Roehl for two yards on the second play of the drive. Brady Payne would take over from there as he went 30 yards, 16 yards, and the final 10 yards in the next three plays to give Millington the lead for good and the 2016 MHSAA Regional title.
Payne led the team with 135 yards on 19 carries that evening. Roehl ended with 94 yards on 18 carries and led the team defensively with nine tackles. Bearss had 127 yards passing. Three of his completions went to Cameron Henderson for 38 yards and two completions went to Jakob Selich for 30 yards. Josh Boros ended with seven tackles, while Jose Ramirez had six.
