YALE – The Cardinal wrestling team finished with one regional champion and two 2nd place finishers at Saturdays Michigan High School Athletic Association’s (MHSAA) Regional Wrestling Tournament at Yale High School. All three wrestlers will move on to the individual state championships which will take place at Ford Field in Detroit on Friday and Saturday, March 6 and 7.
Jack Sherman (41-1) improved his record on the day by going 3-0 and winning the regional for the 130 pound weight class. He defeated Austin Kilburn of Richmond at the 3:08 mark of the match by injury. Making his third trip to the finals, Sherman will face Dylan Reiff (30-16) of Constantine in his first match of the championship competition.
Jack’s brother Luke Sherman will be making his first appearance in the state finals as a freshman. After winning his first two matches in the 112-pound regionals, Sherman (38-4) lost to Hunter Keller of Richmond by fall at the 2:57 mark in the regional final. He will face Trevor Pelton (40-5) of Watervliet in the first round match in Detroit.
Hayden Holmes (41-5), son of 1996 state champion wrestler Jason Holmes, will be making an appearance in the finals on the back of his runner-up regional performance. In a great match, Holmes lost in the 152-pound finals to Ty Tanner of Birch Run 1-0. Holmes will face Cole Hansen (39-4) in his first-round match at Ford Field.
