Multiple Teams · Millington to enter new conference for 2019-2020 sports season

MILLINGTON – Millington’s athletic schedules will begin to have a different look starting in the fall with the 2019-2020 athletic season.  Following Caro’s and North Branch’s departure from the Tri-Valley East before the 2018-2019 athletic season, the Tri-Valley Conference decided to reshuffle the whole conference.  The Tri-Valley East has been eliminated and starting next season just the Tri-Valley Central and Tri-Valley West (TVCW) will be in existence.  Gone from the schedule are familiar foes Frankenmuth, Birch Run, Garber, and Bridgeport.

Millington will become a member of the Tri-Valley West Conference.  Replacing the old foes are Nouvel, Ithaca, Michigan Lutheran Seminary, St. Charles, Hemlock, Carrollton, Bullock Creek, St. Louis, and Valley Lutheran.  The Tri-Valley Central will comprise of Frankenmuth, Swan Valley, Garber, Freeland, Alma, Birch Run, Standish, and Bridgeport.

One of the main reasons for the reshuffling of conferences was not necessarily geography, but because of school size.  For example, the six schools that comprised the Tri-Valley East this past season averaged about 525 students in the school making Millington the smallest school in the conference by over 100 students.  By comparison, next seasons Tri-Valley West conference will average about 350 students per school which will put Millington about 20 students above the conference average.  Next seasons Tri-Valley Central will average about 563 students per high school, almost 200 students more than Millington.

Millington will participate in the 10 team conference in all sports except football.  For football, the Tri-Valley West split into two 5-team divisions with three blind draw cross-over games.  Millington will play in a division with Ithaca, Hemlock, Carrollton, and Bullock Creek (the five largest schools in the TVCW).  The Cardinals drew Seminary, Nouvel and Valley Lutheran to round out the “conference” schedule.  The non-conference games will include Glen Lake High School (Maple City) and Central Montcalm High School (Stanton).  Teams in the new Tri-Valley West have competed in 16 state championship games winning 10 of them.  Throw in Glen Lake’s one championship in three tries and you can see why the Cardinals will have a very challenging 2019 schedule.  Millington’s 2019 schedule can be found here or here with times and directions to away games.
