Cardinals News · 3rd Annual Cardinals Legends Night

MILLINGTON – This Friday, January 11, the girls’ and boys’ basketball programs will be celebrating the 3rd Annual Cardinals Legends Night.  The Legends night was started by the girls’ program two years ago to bring attention to former players, coaches, or teams that have shined in past years.  In the 2016-2017 season, Jolene Kanary (Class of 1987) was honored.  Jolene was the first Millington girls’ basketball player to receive the designation of All-State.  Last year the program honored former coach and Millington educator James Peresta.  Coach Peresta is the all-time winningest coach in the 45 years of Millington girls’ basketball with 139 wins.

“We started three years ago with the idea of introducing former all-state players to our current players,” girls’ coach Christian Selich recently told Millington Athletics.  “Our program did not do a very good job of recognizing some of the great talents in the past so future generations would be aware of them.  I thought we could do better so Coach Trickey (girls assistant coach Corey Trickey) and I came up with this idea and it has now grown into adding the boys’ program as well.  Friday night should be very exciting.”

In this, the third season of the award, the girls’ program will be joining with the boys’ program to honor a Legend from each program.  The boys’ program will be honoring Vern Sergent (Class of 1970).  Vern was one the greatest boys’ players in school history attaining all-state twice (1969 and 1970) and still has standing records that may never be attained again.  He has the school record for points in a game (56), rebounds in a game (40), single season rebounds (463), and career rebounds (864).

The girls’ program will be honoring sisters Renee’ Dukate, née Ill and Robin Kozuch, née Ill.  The “Ill Twins” as they were affectionately known as dominated the basketball and volleyball courts for Millington in the mid-1990s.  They were both all-state basketball players in 1993 and 1994 and were both academic all-state in 1994.  Each of the twins scored over 900 points and grabbed over 480 rebounds in their career.

All three Legends will be honored between the varsity games versus Birch Run on Friday.  They will each be receiving a plaque honoring them as a Cardinal Legend and a commemorative t-shirt.  Each team will be wearing the commemorative t-shirts to warm up.   A small reception will be held after the boys’ game in the high school cafeteria.

Special thanks to the Jeff Yorke Family, Millington Pharmacy, and Millington Pizza for their financial donations towards making this event a success.
