This past weekend at Ford Field in Detroit, Millington had two wrestlers finish in the top eight of their respective weight classes and qualify as an all-state wrestler. Freshman Jack Sherman finished in 5th place and senior Dakota Tatro finished in 8th place.
Sherman who wrestles in the 103-pound weight class started his weekend on Friday afternoon by defeating Garrett Moog of Sanford Meridian High School in a 14-0 major decision win. A 13-10 defeat to eventual state champ Hunter Assenmacher of Ida High School on Friday night would push Sherman into the losers bracket to begin Saturday.
Wins over Baily Borgeld of Comstock Park (technical fall at 5:00 18-2) and Nolan Rodriguez of Alma (MD 13-4) would guarantee Sherman all-state status. A 7-2 defeat at the hands of Jake Elasivich of Montrose put Sherman in the 5th-6th place match. Sherman defeated Will Dubke of Ogemaw Heights High School by the score of 7-0 to finish in 5th place. Sherman finishes the season with a 44-6 overall record.
Dakota Tatro who wrestles in the 130-pound weight class began his weekend on Friday afternoon with a 2-1 victory of John Botkins of Caro High School and then losing to eventual state champion Jarrett Trombley by a technical fall at 4:35 of the match.
On Saturday, Tatro would defeat Carlos Diaz of Kent City High School by the score of 7-5 which would guarantee him all-state status. A 9-4 loss to Zion Taylor of Comstock Park High School put Tatro in the 7th-8th place match. Tatro faced a familiar opponent in Botkins of Caro. This time the match went to Botkins in a 2-0 decision putting Tatro in 8th place. Tatro finishes the season with a 42-8 record.
Millington’s other state qualifier junior Jackson Shreve did not place during the state tournament.
