National Football League stars Tyrone Wheatley (1991), Andre Rison (1985), Jake Long (2003), Jerome Bettis (1990), Antonio Gates (1997), Anthony Zettel (2011), and Cortney Hawkins (1988) have all played in it. Millington stars Matt Opperman (1987), Matt Hoard (1993), Matthew Selich (1995), Chris Crump (1997), Rick Wakins (1998), Chad List (1999), Ken Hoffman (2009), and Connor Collins (2012) have all played in it. Now Bryce Bearss gets his chance to play in it. It is the annual East vs. West High School Football All-Star game.
The 36th annual Michigan High School Football Coaches Association (MHSFCA) / The D Zone East vs. West All-Star Game presented by UAW Ford is an incredible opportunity for Michigan high school graduates to play one last game of high school football in front of their fans, friends, and families on, Saturday, June 23rd, 2018. The game will take place on the campus of Saginaw Valley State University.
Bearss who finished his Millington career as the Cardinals single-season (2,354) and all-time (5,120) passing yardage leader will be joined by two other Thumb-Area athletes on the East squad. Michael Redfield a QB/RB from Mayville and James Schelke a CB/WR from Harbor Beach will form the Thumb trio with Bearss. All three athletes were members of the 2017 All-Thumb football team as voted on by the Thumb Sportswriters Association.
Bearss a two-time All-State quarterback will be joined on the sidelines one last time with his father and former Millington head coach Roger Bearss. Roger will serve as the 1st Assistant Coach and Offensive Coordinator for the East squad’s Head Coach Tyrone Spencer of Detroit King High School. Roger who finished his eight-year Millington career with a 77-16 record won three conference titles, four district titles, and two regional titles as the head coach.
