Birch Run defeated Millington 56-51 on Thursday, despite being outscored 16-6 in the third quarter.
“We kind of lost our composure,” Birch Run coach Dan Kramer said of the third. “Way too many turnovers allowed them back in the game. We allowed them too many open looks on shots and their shots that weren’t falling in the first half were in the third.”
Birch Run led 30-18 at halftime and 53-41 with two minutes to go before a late comeback attempt from Millington.
“We made some adjustments at halftime,” Millington coach Aaron Chamberlain said. “We went to a 1-3 zone in the third quarter and caused some turnovers. As we chipped away at the lead I think they started to gain some confidence.
“We basically had one senior and a bunch of scrappy underclassmen pull us back into the game.”
Savanah Gibson led Birch Run with 18 points, and Kyla Breckenridge scored 10 points. The team was 8 for 25 on free throws.
“We missed some clutch free throws down the stretch,” Kramer said. “We couldn’t put the game away. I was disappointed from the way we just played one of our best games, but the good part is that we won and it’s something to build on.”
Millington’s Molly Wolfington scored 18 points, while Haley Trickey added 10 points and Hailey Murray had nine points.
Chamberlain wasn’t physically at the game, but received regular updates and communicated with Will Millington, who coached in his absence, during halftime.
“He must have done one hell of a job,” Chamberlain said of Millington. “They pulled back into it and had an opportunity to win against a very good Birch Run squad.” Article courtesy of MLive.
